"...that incarceration, oddly and weirdly enough, saved my life." Mary Evans is a human rights advocate, working to promote equality for African Americans, reduce financial disparities in the Dayton area, re-introduce felons to society and teach the next generation the power of journalism.
Mary's experience with addiction, the Ohio bail system and incarceration give her a unique and necessary perspective on the social issues at hand. Ultimately furthering her education as a result of her incarceration, Mary's Media Arts degree has allowed her to enact positive change in the systems she's spent her life fighting. From beginning The Symbolic Interruption during her tenure at Antioch College, to creating the Re-Entry Stories podcast at WYSO Public Radio, Mary exemplifies the power of the tongue. Now, through her work with The Journalism Lab in Dayton, Mary continues to help others take steps toward careers that can enact change. "The tongue is a powerful thing."
